I saw a slow, slimy Snail...was it called Sammy???

Today, I saw a Garden Snail on a bag of compost.  I thought it looked very slimy but it's shell had a nice pattern on.  I wondered if snails are good for my garden or not?
The RSPB Website says Garden Snails are not good for a garden.  This is because they eat flowers and vegetables.  They also lay a lot of eggs.  

  

You can use special things to kill snails but I am not going to do that because I like wildlife.  Lucky Sammy snail!
